Molly's Needles

My adventures in knitting... and a few other things thrown in for fun.

I got back into knitting because of the Harry Potter scarves and sweaters. Although I knit other items, replicating HP-wear remains my first love.

Vacation's over

I took a bit of a break after the Olympics to rest my hands. All that frantic knitting took a toll.

Additionally, I had a scarf to do for a customer. He wanted something original and knit in the round. Oh, and charcoal grey. That was all I could get from him on what he wanted so I did what I wanted. It was the Project from Hell. Knit from Plymouth Encore, which is actually rather nice for being mostly acrylic. First, I designed a seed stitch panel that went up the center of each side. However, one of my skeins appeared to be short (or I way undercalculated, which is probably more correct) and it came out too short. So I ripped it all out, talked to him about adding an asymetrical colorblock of black and started over. This time I did a seed stich edging, knit plain for the body until I ran out of grey, added the black and continued in plain knit then did a matching edge. I fringed each end with its own color (one grey, the other black). Came out nice. It was 43" long when blocked, not including the fringe, and nice and thick. He loved it but it was the most expensive $30 scarf I've ever done. Oh, the re-knit was done in one night. I took much Advil the next day. Anyway, he came in today wearing it. I hadn't realized that because he's a rather big man, it still is a bit short. So I took it back and will add more black to it. Not too bad because I only have to rip back past the seed stitch.

I think I'm going to give up scarves for a while.

Because of that I haven't picked up the Quidditch sweater yet but it is waiting and will be started on this weekend. I'm looking forward to finishing that and getting to wear it. My patch is waiting to be attached. :)

I also got the book Knitted Babes. These are so cute. I'm making one out of some leftover yarn to see how they knit up. I think I'll keep this one because she's done in pale grey and I think I'll use some leftover Homespun in Gothic (deep purple) for her hair. Won't that be snazzy? I did order the sample box of Knit Pick's Palette yarn that should be perfect for making a bunch of them. Maybe I'll give each one a Pygmy Puff for a pet. Although I think the scale would make them more like Puffskeins, wouldn't it?

So, that's what I'm up to right now. I'm going to my father's for the day on Saturday. I'll be checking up on his alpaca and maybe see if I can wrangle some yarn from him.
